Abstract

This article aims to analyze the political participation of Joaquin Fernandez de Leiva and Miguel Riesco in the Cortes de Cadiz during 1810-1813, beyond the links that can be established between the Capitanía General de Chile and the 1812 Constitution. Their activity in the Cortes shows clearly their deep knowledge about the American reality and the liberal ideas of that period. The evidence shows that Fernández de Leiva's defense of the American interests, did not aim the Independence from the metropolis, but rather, equal rights and conditions by the way of autonomy.
